Kelsey est à Paris!

Yep, Kelsey's in Paris!  She arrived Sunday morning, and we immediately set out to explore Paris!  First stop was Montmartre, where we visited the Sacre Coeur, Moulin Rouge, the "I love you" wall, and Starbucks (always a treat).  Then we went to the Marais, ate falafels, and walked around my favorite narrow streets in Paris.  We set home early this day so that Kelsey could rest up and begin adjusting to the time difference, which meant homemade pasta for dinner!

"I Love You" written (supposedly) in every language of the world...

Cute little passage we came across in between the Ile St. Louis and Le Marais
Moulin Rouge!

Monday we decided to hit the stores.  Because this was the last day of Les Soldes, and we were going out for my friends birthday that night, it was the perfect day for some always relaxing shopping.  We went back to the Marais to hit up my favorites, and ended up with some great, cheap finds!  We visited Notre Dame, and took a walk around the Latin Quarter, before grabbing a crepe and heading home to prepare for the night's festivities!  My new French friend Alex turned 23 Monday night, so we met him and some other friends at our favorite standby, The Great Canadian Pub, for some fun and a few drinks.  The French sure know how to party...2 bars and 7 hours later, we finally made it home at 6 am!  Unfortunately I couldn't keep up, and I was so tired by the time that we made it to the second bar that I was like a walking zombie!  Overall it was a great night, and I'm so glad that Kelsey got to have a fun night out and meet my new friends!

In front of the Notre Dame, we asked a guy to take our pic with the church in it, instead he hands us this sign and completely excludes the church...ok...

Our "French face" picture, aka no smile....and yes, that is a stain on my shirt, someone spilled their beer on me almost immediately upon arriving :(

So happy to have Kelsey in Paris!!

It just happened to be Valentine's Day, not a shabby way to spend it if I do say so myself!

Tuesday, as you can imagine, turned out to be a bust.  Arriving home at 6 am doesn't really allow for a normal sleeping schedule, so after falling asleep at 6:30 am, we awoke again at 2:30 pm.  A quick breakfast later and we found ourselves back in bed for the day.  The combo of jetlag and late nights didn't mix well with Kelsey, so she went back to bed until about 5 pm!  Eventually we pried ourselves out of bed in time to take a quick walk around the canal, stop in to my favorite French restaurant for a delicious dinner (warm goat cheese salad, salmon for me, chicken for Kelsey, and a chocolate lave cake for dessert, yummm)!  We called it an early night this night so that we could wake up early Wednesday and make up for our lost time!

Wednesday, our plan worked.  We were up and out in time for a late breakfast/early lunch at my new favorite neighborhood juice bar.  Yummy Pad Thai salad with a mixed fruit smoothie was the perfect start to our day!  We met up with Jaimie and headed over to the Champs Elysees for more shopping and sightseeing.  Luckily the only purchases here were some well-deserved macarons from the famous LaDuree!  We decided to climb the 300+ stairs to the top of the Arc de Triomphe and take in the wonderful views of the city, and make up for our lack of movement the previous day!  Unfortunately this day was cut short because of work.  I had to go out to Chaveney, a town on the outskirts of Paris, to pick up the kiddos who were staying at Grandma's house all week!  I ended up bringing home Alice and her 5 year old cousin Leonie, and Lucien stayed to play with his older cousins for the night.  We came home and had a fun girls night with breakfast for dinner and Peter Pan!  Then Kelsey and I invaded Ally's house with Jaimie to make dinner and watch a movie.  Because Jaimie is essentially homeless, and Ally and her au pair family are on a ski vacation, their house has become Jaimie's house for the week.  We made a delicious, home-made zucchini quiche, followed by camembert cheese and baguette...tres francais!  We decided to watch The Shining because Kelsey and I had never seen it, but I was soon the only one watching as the other girls passed out, so I sat their with chills all over my body for the 2 hour duration of the movie...weirddd movie!  We ended up staying the night at Ally's so we wouldn't have to walk home at 1 am!

Alice and Leonie on the train back to Paris

Thursday, today!  We woke up too too early so that I could make it home in time to work at 9 am!  Spent the day occupying the little girls, watching Star Wars, making lunch/snacks, and then setting out for an adventure.  We took the girls to the Champ du Mars (the park below the Eiffel Tower) for a puppet show, pony rides, carousel rides, and some fun play time at the park.  They had a great time, and minus the freezing temperatures, Kelsey and I enjoyed ourselves as well.  We made our way over to the girls' Great-Grandparents' house just next to the Eiffel Tower to meet Valerie at 6 pm and transfer kids.  During the walk there, Alice was complaining of a tummy ache, but we just assumed it was because she was playing so hard...if only.  After carrying her, kissing her to make her feel better, and having her breathe all over me, the tummy ache still wouldn't go away, and I find out tonight that soon after I left, she spewed her brains all over Grandma's carpet.  WONDERFUL!  One day before my long-awaited, 10 day vacation in Italy, Alice gets the stomach flu, and I am stuck cleaning up her barf from 8 am till 6 pm tomorrow.  Please please pray Kelsey and I don't catch the flu!!  What a way to ruin a vacation....

However, on the topic of Italy, only 1 day left!!  Kelsey and I head to the airport bright and early Saturday morning for our first destination: Rome!!  We will be in Rome for 3 days, Florence for 2 days, and Venice for 4 days!  Not only that, but we will be arriving in Venice just in time for Carnival, so the hunt for a mask has begun!!  We are so excited for our adventure because it will be the first time to Italy for the both of us!  So, if anyone has any must-see places (or must-eat restaurants) in any of the cities, please comment and let us know!!  Look for my next blog in the beginning of March to spill all the wonderful details of our fabulous vacation, but in the meantime, pray for our safety!!  Love you all!
 Ciao!

Gotta Love the Dutch...

I will start off by saying:  I want to move to Amsterdam.  No, not for the drugs, I have no interest in that business, but for the simple fact that it is THE most beautiful, relaxed, down to earth, friendly city that I have ever been to...and did I say beautiful?  It's gorgeous!  Look:

This picture quite aptly describes Amsterdam: canals, bikes, boats, and old buildings...if only it was Spring or Summer!
Because Amsterdam is essentially a bunch of tiny islands separated by an intricate layout of canals leading to the major Amstel River, all of my "scenery" pictures are of canals.  However different and uniquely beautiful they all are, it is something that can only be admired fully in person, but these 2 pictures are the best I could find.  Now you understand why I want to live there?  Maybe I can look up an au pair job there for next year....

Our weekend began Friday night at 8:05 pm, as soon as my relief (Nico) walked through that door.  Jaimie and I were antsy to get to Ally's and get the night started, because we had the BEST birthday present ever to give to her.  This entire trip was a surprise to Ally.  I have been emailing Marie, Ally's host mom for a few weeks now, trying to organize some sort of trip and figuring out a way to have Ally get the weekend off of work from BIA.  Eventually I just decided to tell Ally that I have a gift in mind for her, but the only way for her to retrieve it is to get Sunday off of work (she already had Saturday off).  That she did, so Marie booked our tickets, and paid for Ally's and part of mine and Jaimie's tickets, just to ensure we could afford to take Ally...she is amazing!!  Now for the reveal.  Ally was anticipating this surprise all week, but I told her she must wait until her actual birthday to find out the surprise.  We wanted the reveal to be just as fun, so I decided to wrap up the book that Ally gave me for my birthday, partly as a joke, but also because I want her to read it now.  Inside the front cover was a poem I had written, saying:

When I thought about gifts to get my dear friend,
I considered all things, beginning to end.

I looked at books, gift cards, or a new style shoe,
but I soon realized that none of these would do.

I then decided to take on a recruit,
with Jaimie on board, it'd be the best gift to boot!

We wanted something special to make you really flip,
and realized what better than a fun weekend trip!

So, Ally dear, pack a bag, you have nothing to lose,
and search through this book for the hidden clues.

When you unscramble the letters and find our destination,
you'll wonder how we paid for this spectacular vacation.

So here's the real secret, we didn't work alone,
Marie and Sam were crucial with their free-of-debt loan!

You're as special to them as you are to us,
so this weekend's for you, free of all fuss.

We love you dear friend, you're worth more than you know,
Now let's head to the town to commence the shit show!!

Yes, I know, I am quite talented in the rhyming sector....Now of course, inside I had placed letters in a random order that she had to unscramble.  With a few hints, she figured it out, and the look on her face and surprise in her voice made it all worth it!
Clearly she was excited....
So, as I said previously, our train left Saturday morning at 8:30 am.  After just 2 hours of sleep, we were not feeling too hot, so we had that short 3 hour train ride to sleep and rejuvenate.
Clearly 3 hours was not enough...

We arrived into Amsterdam at 11:30 am, where our host for the weekend greeted us at the train station.  We had decided to couchsurf this weekend in an effort to make it 1. as cheap as possible and 2. as fun as possible.  Staying with locals who know their way around and can offer true insight into what their city has to offer is the absolute best way to discover a new city.  Our host's name was Gerben (pronounced Herr-ben, with a little phlegm on the H) and he is a 26 year old lawyer who was born and raised in the Netherlands, and now lives alone in a great apartment in the city center.  He invited along his friend Chris to join him for the weekend (I think the thought of hosting 3 girls was a bit intimidating for him).  These wonderful hosts walked us back to the apartment, where we sat and chatted for a bit, and then decided to head out for lunch.  We discovered an awesome street market selling everything you could imagine and settled into a deceivingly awesome Turkish restaurant for lunch.  After lunch, they took us on a walking tour of the city which included the Royal Palace, main shopping street, Red Light District, Rembrandt Square, and a peek inside an infamous coffeeshop.  We made a pit stop to sample a Dutch specialty, Herring....not bad, but being that it is a huge slab of raw fish in a bun with onions on top, there were just too many things wrong with it to finish, namely the texture.
Sampling the Herring...barf.

Common sight in Amsterdam...no we did not go in any!
After the tour, we went back to their place to have a little nap and shower and prepare for the night's festivities.  Gerben took the liberty of buying us tickets to a typical Amsterdam rave party.  He insists you can't visit Amsterdam without going to a rave, so we agreed to go, having no idea what was in store for us.  We had an all too short nap, a quick shower, and a leisurely time putting on our faces.  By 11 pm, we were ready to go see what all the hype was about!  Gerben had invited 2 of his friends from college (fraternity brothers actually...they have fraternities in the Netherlands!) so once they arrived and the introductions were made, we were off.  *Random side note...reason number 3 why I want to move to Amsterdam: EVERYone is gorgeous.  We felt like royalty being escorted to this party with 4 very good looking gentlemen...and gentlemen they definitely were!*

We got to the party, which was in an old warehouse on the outskirts of town, and were blown away by what was inside.  A large stage with DJ Michael De Hey (supposedly this would be the techno equivalent of a rock concert in the states), colorful lights everywhere, and a HUGE net of balloons tied to the roof.  Our first stop inside was the coat check, followed by the bar.  Unfortunately for me, I was not feeling too hot, so I stuck to water this night.  The bar was something so foreign to me as well.  All drinks came in glass bottles, even the water, and they sold popsicles!  Why bars don't do this in the states is a mystery to me, because after a night of dancing and working up a sweat, this is the best treat in the world!  The 7 of us stuck together all night, with the boys acting as our "protectors" all night from the other creeper guys who tried to sneak in on us.  They were truly amazing, and we couldn't thank them enough for looking out for us!!  We had so so so much fun this night that time just seemed to fly, and when they announced the last song at 5 am, we realized we should probably head home.  Good thing we got our practice in the night before of staying out late, or we would have never made it!

POPSICLES!!  So refreshing :)
On our way to our taxi, we passed one of the famous signs that Amsterdam is known for, so we took a moment for a photo op.  This was a great end to the night!

We ended up staying up and reminiscing about our night until 7 am, before finally heading to bed.  We woke up later around 2 pm (WOW!), showered, and us girls ventured out to the Anne Frank house.  What a sight to see.  It was one of the most well-done museums I have ever visited and is a must-see for anyone visiting the city.  After this, we grabbed a bite to eat and headed back to Gerben's house to relax and hang with them before we left the next day.  Early to bed, early to rise on Monday so Gerben could get to work, and we found ourselves at a little restaurant eating delicious Dutch pancakes for breakfast.  Unfortunately, my camera was dead by now so I have nothing to document the monstrosity of these pancakes, but they were delicious!  We made our way to the train station and at 11:30 am, we were on the train headed back to Paris.  This weekend was hands down the best weekend of our lives, and we are all in agreement over that.  We couldn't have asked for a better host, or better friends of the host.  We have made great friends to last a lifetime and are anticipating their visit to Paris, and our approaching return trip to Amsterdam (hopefully in May when the weather is warm and flowers are in bloom)!  Ally thoroughly enjoyed her birthday, and it made us happy that we could do something so special for her.  Spending the weekend with these girls has made me realize how much I truly cherish the new friendships I have with them.  I don't want to imagine my life in Paris without them, and I know we will all stay friends forever.  Just talking about this weekend still makes us bust up laughing and puts huge smiles on our faces.  My advice to everyone: GO TO AMSTERDAM.

Potlucks, Playdates, Perverts, and Parties

Well it has been a while since I last updated this and I must apologize!  Life has been a whirlwind of amazing adventures lately, so I am quite excited to finally have the time to tell you all about them!

For the past 2 weekends, Val and Nico and family have been out of town, leaving me in a big empty apartment with noooo responsibilities...my favorite!  So, I decided to invite a couple friends over last weekend to have a little dinner party.  Ally, Jaimie, and Amanda joined me at the table, where we feasted on all things pumpkin.  See, when Ben arrived from the US, he brought along my much anticipated canned pumpkin, but jumbo sized.  These cans are huge, and once opened they must be used up quickly.  So this night we made some delicious pumpkin risotto, herb grilled chicken, and a stir-fry of eggplant, zucchini, and peppers, and of course dessert: an almond pumpkin torte.  It was all delicious, and we had a great time catching up, eating, and drinking wine.  We then decided to head out on the town.  We have a new favorite pub called the Great Canadian.  It is a very relaxed atmosphere of mostly foreigners.  We have learned the foreigners=nice, friendly, and open to meeting/talking to new people, as opposed to French people who just kinda suck in all of the above areas.  We were fortunate enough to meet some new friends this night, 2 American football players, and 2 French football players, all playing on a professional French "American football" (not soccer) team just outside Paris.  We hung out with them for the night, exchanged contact info, and have been communicating since!  It's so nice to finally add some testosterone to the mix...my social life has been all girls all the time since September, which is not something I'm quite used to back home.

Ally, Amanda, and Jaimie

Playdates....I'll sum this one up by simply saying I'm crazy.  Last Friday when I picked the kids up from school, I knew Lucien was hoping to invite 2 friends over.  Normally I am OK with this because in exchange, Alice and the little girls go somewhere else, so it's a nice break for me.  Well this day another set of siblings was added to the mix, bringing the total to 4 boys and 3 girls.  Me, expecting the other nou nou to take all 3 girls, invited all 4 boys to our house.  Then, the other nanny says she can't take the girls, and I foresee the biggest meltdown of the century coming from Alice when she learns she has to come home with no friends, while Lucien brings back 3.  So, I buck up and invite the girls too....7 kids...Cory...WHAT ARE YOU THINKING?!  Simple answer: I. have. no. idea.  Honestly it wasn't too bad, the boys played beyblades (tops...hugely popular here), while the girls colored.  The hard part was actually getting them bundled up and out of the house to get them home.  We managed, but we were 20 minutes late getting them home.  Never again, though, I have learned my lesson.

Alice, Sybille, Emilie, Idris, Lucien, Baltazar, Sasha....oh la la.
Perverts.  Well, for those of you who remember my previous blog about Nico being very distant to try and fend off any rumor/thought/whatever of "us"....it worked.  Unfortunately, it didn't work too well for my good friend Jaimie.  I heard over and over from people "watch out, the dad will put the moves on you!" but I had never heard a real story of it happening, nor did I ever want to.  My wish did not come true, and this time it hit too close to home.  My new, close friend Jaimie has turned into my roommate for the last week, as she was forced to abruptly pack up and move out of her au pair family's house this last Friday.  Without going into too much detail, the dad put the moves on her, but not without the mom's OK.  The story gets even more twisted than this, but I will save face for all involved, and especially all reading.  Needless to say, she realized living with them was no longer an option.  So, in a top secret, covert operation, we went to her house last Thursday, packed up her entire room, and Friday after all had left for work, she called a cab and left their house forever, leaving them with just a simple email saying she won't be back.  She is now spending the month of February splitting her time between mine and Ally's houses, while looking for a room to move into for the month of March and beyond.  She has also been looking for a new job.  She was lucky enough to score an "interview" at BIA, the restaurant where Ally works, yesterday afternoon....what do you know, she is currently working her first shift there.  Things are turning from the absolute worst, to possibly the absolute best.  Either way, I am SO THANKFUL that it wasn't me...Nico, thank you for your awkward distance, over and over, times 1000. Thank you.

Parties.  And party we did, because Ally turned 23 on Friday!!!  The night started with pizza and champagne at Ally's house, before venturing out on the town.  Jaimie, Ally, and I started out at OZ, the Australian Bar, which was pretty much dance central.  We danced for a bit, but decided it was too hot and too much like a high school prom, so we decided to go to the ole standby, the Great Canadian.  When we left the bar, we met up with our new friends from the previous weekend (Alex and Cesar, the 2 Frenchies).  Together we went to the Canadian, where we found ourselves a table, good company, and good conversation into the wee hours of the morning.  Of course accompanying all of this were millions upon millions of photos being taken every second...we all seem to be good at that!  When the bar closed at 3, we found ourselves continuing the photo shoot on the streets of Paris until we finally decided to venture home around 5 am.  Typical night in Paris, hell all of Europe stays out that late, but it was a big change for me coming from San Luis Obispo, where bars close at 2 and you're tucked into bed by 3 at the latest..clearly I haven't done much "partying" since I've been here!  The only downside of this was the vacation we had planned for the rest of the weekend, which required us to be on a train by 8:30 am Saturday morning.  2 hours of sleep later, we were (barely) awake and dragging ourselves to the train station.  We made it to our train, and off to AMSTERDAM we went, so my next post will be all about the most amazing weekend of my life!  Stay tuned!!!
