Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Kuala Lumpur was meant to be just a quick layover, but when that layover turned into 25 hours, we decided to make the most of it and extend it to 48 hours. We arrived in the evening and were greeted by the most generous, wonderful Malaysian woman who runs the hostel. She showed us around, made us feel comfortable, and invited us to join them for a birthday BBQ later that night. Unfortunately we were far too hungry to wait so we went next door to the highly recommended Indian restaurant for some delicious chicken, lamb, and rice. We then went back to the hostel to relax and have a very low key night, which is pretty much how our entire stay was.

The next day was our sightseeing day as we planned a walking route around the city to see all the big sights. First up was Chinatown with it's narrow streets full of "real fake stuff". Loads of knock-off products that surprisingly looked quite authentic. Next up was the walking street and central market-and indoor market of various stalls offering authentic Malaysian souvenirs. We came across a little store offering fish pedicure services. Very popular in Asia, you sit with your feet in a tank and let the suckling fish eat off all your dead skin. Jaimie had wanted to do it for a while, this place was cheap, so we went for it. First was a tank of tiny fish that was no doubt the weirdest most tickly feeling ever. Next was a bigger tank full of bigger fish, about 4 inches long. Ticklish but also a bit painful as their constant bites began to feel a bit like a nail file rubbing holes in my feet. Such a weird feeling and so ticklish that it made my stomach hurt! I'm glad I did it, my feet were quite soft, but never again, far too weird. After the walking street we went to see the oldest mosque in Malaysia, however it was closed to tourists that day so we had to stick with pictures from the outside. It this time a heavy downpour hit us, but luckily we were right next to a metro station, so we hopped on to head to the twin towers. We strolled through the mall and made our way to the lobby of the towers, only to find out we couldn't get to the top because of renovations. So, more pictures of just the outside. Then we walked to the KL Tower, slightly resembling the Seattle Space Needle. This one was in fact open, but the $15 entrance fee forced us to settle with even more pictures from the outside again. By now we were tired and worn out, so we returned home to freshen up and grab some more Indian food for lunch, this time chicken curry and noodles. We spent the afternoon escaping the rain by lounging in the cozy hostel, uploading pictures and watching The Silence of the Lambs. That evening we ventured out again to have a taste of the famous food cart street just 1 block from the hostel. Delicious dim sum and spicy chicken and back to the hostel we went. As we got back the amazing hostel staff was just starting an evening movie, so I went to join them while Jaimie skyped with family. Later that night I got to have a long and lively skype with my parents before heading to bed.

Our last day in KL we knew would be a write off, as we had seen the good sights and were not too impressed with the city, we felt no need to go see more. We slept in, packed our things, and spent the afternoon reading Indonesian guide books and trying to find a nice but not too expensive hotel in Bali. Next thing we knew it was time to head out, and off to the airport we went! Next stop: Bali!
